Eating Elephants

It would be rather hard to disprove that you are, right now, existing. Hello, you! As you exist, you behave in whatever way you choose, constantly. According to everything that I have learned about spirituality in general, the very purpose of life is to improve the way that you behave. To progress, to become better. Not to attain wealth, property, or standing in the eyes of others. But to improve the choices, on a constant basis. Every moment matters, not just when people tell you they do. Oddly enough, I do not intend to address the why of life. This is a very different thought. I also do not intend to tell you to strive for perfection. It's a high bar, and unrealistic.

Let's talk about working from where we are. A man I used to work for liked to ask a question that would immediately illicit groans. How do you eat an elephant? The answer is one bite at a time. Large, daunting tasks, when broken into steps, become a series of smaller tasks. Significantly easier ones, as well. Removing a tire is significantly easier without the lug nuts holding it on, for example. Any one lug nut is simple to remove. You can't spin them all off at once, either. You just do not have enough hands for that. So small steps complete the project.

With your own work, it goes the same way. No one could possibly be expected to wake up perfect. It's not going to happen. That's also a quick way to feel like a failure. However, if nothing else, it is possible to even occasionally remember to take care of a small detail that no one knows about. To be a better person, if only for an instant, because it is the right thing to do. Or, to simply understand that the only way forward is to work with exactly where you are first. Any progress is progress. But knowing where you are, no matter where that is, is the exact starting point of personal gain.

Choosing to improve is worthy of congratulations, and support. And, quite frankly, thanks. Thank you for choosing to make the world a better place. For choosing to be better in it. Thank you for all the little things you do, that no one knows you did. For all the sacrifices you made that went silently by. For every act of love that no one said thank you for. The donations of time, food or money. All that stuff. The healers of the world commend you and appreciate it more than you know.

I am sure I speak for the community at large when I say that no matter where you are, or how you choose to behave, you are right where you need to be to start eating your own elephant. And no matter where it is you want to be, it is currently chow time. It isn't hard to improve, even a just a little bit. But it does require effort, and we can assist you. And don't be afraid to be where you are, openly and without shame. The decision to improve tells us what we need to know. All you have to do is show up for you. And we're proud of you.
